Advertising Theory provides detailed and current explorations of key theories in the advertising discipline. The volume gives a working knowledge of the primary theoretical approaches of advertising, offering a comprehensive synthesis of the vast literature in the area. Editors Shelly Rodgers and Esther Thorson have developed this volume as a forum in which to compare, contrast, and evaluate advertising theories in a comprehensive and structured presentation. With new chapters on forms of advertising, theories, and concepts, and an emphasis on the role of new technology, this new edition is uniquely positioned to provide detailed overviews of advertising theory.
Utilizing McGuire’s persuasion matrix as the structural model for each chapter, the text offers a wider lens through which to view the phenomenon of advertising as it operates within various environments. Within each area of advertising theory―and across advertising contexts―both traditional and non-traditional approaches are addressed, including electronic word-of-mouth advertising, user-generated advertising, and social media advertising contexts.
“Rodgers and Thorson have compiled an essential and thorough set of chapters by highly-regarded experts in advertising. This volume is a must-read for advertising scholars, students, and practitioners alike. Advertising Theory covers topics ranging from audiences to online videos and serves as a grand overview of the current state of the field, while also including some historical perspective and a look toward the future. The breadth and depth of Advertising Theory makes it a uniquely valuable text.”

Persuasion Ethics Today
Persuasion Ethics Today explores persuasive communication in the fields of advertising, promotions, public relations and integrated marketing communication, and is designed for course use in advertising curricula.
Ethical questions have become increasingly important in today’s media landscape, and issues of regulation, privacy, and convenience are the subjects of heated debate among consumers, industry professional, policy makers, and interest groups. With the explosion of social media, mobile devices, tracking technologies, and behavioral targeting, the ethical issues about persuasion continue to increase in importance.
This book’s goal is to offer a broad introduction to the ethical standards, challenges, understanding, and decision-making strategies involved in the practice of persuasion. Persuasion Ethics Today links real world persuasive communication activities to fundamental philosophies of ethics. It also offers tools for students and practitioners to engage with ethical dilemmas in a systematic way, and jumpstart debates about the right ethical choices in an increasingly complex media and social environment.
Political Socialization in a Media Saturated World
The studies that comprise Political Socialization in a Media Saturated World synthesize, question, and update our knowledge of political socialization that has accumulated over the past 40 years of related research. The scholarship advances innovative theoretical perspectives and develops new models of the socialization process that revolve around the key social structures of family, media, peers, and school. The Hierarchy Model of Political Socialization, in particular, provides a comprehensive conceptual framework for organizing and analyzing youth responses to the political. With research that spans multiple election cycles across nearly a decade, and data drawn from a national panel study that allows for cross-generational comparison, the findings and models of political socialization presented provide the most comprehensive and in-depth examination of youth political socialization that exists to date. This book provides a foundation and research agenda for examining the Millennial generation in the coming years as these citizens mature to adults and become the driving force of society and our polity.
Reporting Disaster on Deadline: A Handbook for Students and Professionals
Reporting Disaster on Deadline: A Handbook for Students and Professionals provides an introduction to covering crises, considering practice issues and providing guidance in preparing for and responding to calamities. It offers a concise overview for journalism academics and practitioners of covering disasters – not a "how to" handbook but a "how to prepare" reference to be used before a crisis occurs.
This essential resource is among the first to focus specifically and comprehensively on journalistic coverage of disasters. It demonstrates the application of scholarship and theory to professional practice, and includes a crash book template with logistical and information-collection requirements.
As a text for advanced reporting, broadcast journalism, and journalism ethics, or a reference for professionals, Reporting Disaster on Deadline provides key information for keeping on deadline in responding to crises.
““Reporting Disaster on Deadline offers journalism professionals and students a ready reference outlining disaster coverage from every angle. Journalists, as First Responders at scenes of tragedies, play important roles as the public’s eyes and ears. The book’s authors have created a great tool for seasoned reporters or for those learning the craft.””

Advertising Age: The Principles of Advertising and Marketing Communication at Work
Esther Thorson has published extensively on the news industry, advertising, news effects and health communication. Along with Professors Hari Sridhar and Murali Mantrala she has developed econometric models that link newspaper budget management with revenue/profit patterns. Her scholarly work has won a variety of research and writing awards and she has advised nearly 40 doctoral dissertations. She applies research, both hers and that of her colleagues, in newsrooms and advertising agencies across the US and abroad. She serves on an extensive list of journal editorial boards. Her latest books are (with David Schumann) Internet Advertising: Theory and Research (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2007and (with Jerry Parker), Health Communication in the New Media Landscape (Springer, 2008).
Health Communication in the New Media Landscape
To date, little guidance exists for health care professionals who want and need new ways to communicate health information with each other, their patients, and the general public. To address this need, Health Communication in the New Media Landscape presents innovative, media-based methods of communication to graduate students, educators, health care professionals, public health officials, and communication experts.
Health Communication in the New Media Landscape demonstrates the extent to which modern, digital technology can serve as the most practical and efficient form of distributing health-related information. The authors are confident that, if implemented wisely, technology can and will transform the face of health communication as we know it.
“In this volume there are examples of how advances in technology not only empower individuals in their interactions with a health system but also enable health professionals to better tailor their work and time for the benefit of patients and clients.”
Internet Advertising: Theory and Research
Building on the research presented in their previous edition, Advertising and the World Wide Web (1999), editors David W. Schumann and Esther Thorson offer the expertise of active scholars in the area of Internet advertising in this new volume, and allow readers to reflect on the ever-changing nature of the Internet. Internet Advertising marks this important point in history, taking into account the state of practice, theoretical conceptualizations, empirical research, creative typologies, and potential considerations.
This contemporary analysis of Internet advertising will appeal to all practitioners and “students” of the Internet, and will effectively suit courses taught in this area.
Nearly all chapters are in the form of integrated reviews of theory and research, which provide a source of both previous knowledge, as well as future focus for advertising strategy.
““If you are looking for a compilation of previous research on Internet advertising, from theory to specific areas of interest, Internet Advertising: Theory and Research is what you’ve been looking for. This book does a great job of examining Internet advertising theory, discussing its history, and compiling selections representative of recent trends by reviewing published research.””
Advertising and the World Wide Web
The chapters provide a wide-ranging view of issues addressing how advertisers can proceed on the Internet and World Wide Web. An initial chapter traces the development of Web advertising from its very beginnings as it was represented and discussed in the pages of Advertising Age. Although there is a noticeable trend to define Web advertising by comparing it to traditional media, it is clear that Web advertising just won't fit the old mold. Keith Reinhard of DDB Needham actually articulates this linkage between the old and new in his invited chapter.
What the reader will encounter in Advertising and the World Wide Web is a solid conception of how Web advertising is different from anything that has come before. There are numerous discussions on consumer and advertiser interactivity, the role of Web advertising within larger campaigns, audience segmentation, and alternative Web-based promotion formats. The five sections cover definition and theory, structure, specific applications, legal issues, and the voice of the practitioner. Although there remain a few nay-sayers concerning the future of Web advertising, the reader will be able to see just how incredibly high-impact this new medium has become and the vast potential that it holds for future promotional endeavors.
“Advertising and the World Wide Web is certainly timely as advertising appears ever more ubiquitous on the web....one of the few scholarly analyses to date on what to many web users is a rising fact of life, if not a problem.”
Assessing Public Journalism
In response to increasingly negative attitudes toward journalism and its coverage of public affairs, many newspapers and television stations across the United States have experimented with novel approaches to reporting to better meet the public's demand for news. Known as "civic" or "public" journalism, this new movement seeks to improve the news media's ability to supply the information and insights needed by citizens of a democratic society. Critics of public journalism say it contradicts some principles of traditional reporting. As a result, the new movement has spurred great controversy among journalists. Assessing Public Journalism is the first book to evaluate this movement.
Public journalists use a variety of innovative methods to achieve their goals. To connect more closely with citizens, they may listen to their readers and viewers in neighborhood settings and public forums. To frame stories more accurately, they sometimes conduct focus groups and opinions polls. To maximize the reach of their work, print and electronic journalists have experimented with coordinated coverage of key elections and major public issues. Their goal is a form of journalism that improves the quality of citizen deliberation and participation in public life.
By collecting and focusing a wide range of original research and selected professional commentary, Assessing Public Journalism provides the necessary framework for examining the issues surrounding public journalism and for determining what must be done to enable it to meet its full potential. Scholars, journalists, and concerned citizens will benefit from this vital study.
Integrated Communication
Building brands through integrated marketing is an approach being used by all top-level marketing strategists. The result of a series of papers presented at the eleventh annual Advertising and Consumer Psychology Conference held in Chicago, this volume brings together researchers and professionals whose efforts focus on integrating the various persuasive tools of marketing. It goes beyond case studies of the use of integrated marketing to look at how integrated communication actually works on achieving optimal effects on the various audiences for products.
